"Doors open, doors close. One enters, one exits. Coming and going.
Is it the symbolic element of a door that appeals to artists, or is it that doors can be seen as canvases—a blank and welcoming surface for creating?
I decided to curate this exhibition because in all my years of collecting art, I have seen many artists’ works that feature doors. I think of ornate Medieval-like gates, Subodh Gupta’s Door made entirely of brass, and the work of Ugo Rondinone. Large installations such as Mike Nelson’s intricate labyrinths and Leandro Erlich’s compelling Las Puertas (2004-2005) from Creative Time’s exhibition The Plain of Heaven also come to mine. There are of course too many to list.
In Please Enter, I am excited to present a selection of door-themed works that I feel are amongst the strongest to date. Recognizable pieces such as Ai Weiwei’s iconic Marble Door and IN OUT-II by Rachel Whiteread will be shown alongside other provocative works in various media by established and emerging artists. Come in, enjoy, and please exit." --Beth Rudin deWoody
